Create Your Own Candy Buffet

A candy buffet is currently a very fashionable addition to a wedding reception, and one reason for its popularity is that it serves so many purposes. It creates a decorative focal point for your reception as well as providing an additional activity for guests. Your candy buffet can be your dessert, your wedding favours, and fuel for late night dancing all rolled into one.

There are many companies offering ready-made candy buffets but it ‘s actually very easy to create your own without a great deal of expense. Here are a few tips on creating your own candy buffet.

  1. Collect big clear glass jars and containers that have a large enough opening for a scoop. Check out charity shops and car boot sales as these can be great sources of glass jars. Try to get plenty of different shapes and sizes to create an eye catching display. You can also collect coloured boxes to add interest and different levels to your buffet.
  2. Look for pretty coloured paper bags or small favour boxes that work with your colour scheme. You can choose to either leave these on the candy buffet for your guests to fill, or place an empty one in each place setting with a note inviting them to visit the candy bar.
  3. Decide on the types of sweets you want to fill your candy jars. Ideally you should stick to a colour palette that works with your wedding theme, e.g. white and pink, pastel colours, or bright citrus shades. Some couples choose a theme such as retro sweets or jelly sweets. Try to have a variation in the sizes and shapes of your sweets. Unusual lollies or candy trees work very well next to jars of smaller sweets.
  4. Make sure your guests know what they are supposed to do by putting up signs and labels indicating that they can help themselves to the buffet. Provide scoops or tongs unless all your sweets are wrapped. Make sure you have enough sweets for each guest to fill a bag or box and then some extra for them to munch on during the day. It’s a great idea to keep some extra sweets hidden away in case you have a few guests with an unexpectedly sweet tooth!
