Have Cupcakes Had Their Day?

If you believe what the wedding magazines tell us, cupcake towers for weddings are totally out of fashion, and any bride who’s any bride is choosing a more traditional tiered cake with simple white or pastel icing and textured details.

However, I was chatting to a local wedding cake supplier at a wedding fair this weekend, and she told me that the number of orders she is getting for cupcake towers are far higher than for traditional wedding cakes, and that there has been a continuing increase in cupcake orders over the last couple of years.

As I stood at the table talking to her, there was a steady stream of brides oohing and ahhing at the stunning cupcake tower in the centre of the display while the more ‘fashionable’ cakes were getting very little attention.

So is it true? Are we all carrying on our love affair with cupcakes under the radar of the big wedding magazines? As a particular fan of cute and colourful cupcakes I do hope so!

So what is it we like so much about wedding cupcakes?

  1. They’re cute and childlike, perfect for the innocence that goes with a wedding celebration
  2. We can mix flavours and colours to create something for all tastes no matter how fussy our guests are
  3. They don’t need to be cut into pieces and served, guests can help themselves to one cake each
  4. Cupcakes are usually more affordable than a traditional cake and we can even make them ourselves
