Wedding Cakes – becoming more elaborate

Wedding cakes are still a popular feature of most weddings, and the cake cutting ceremony usually happens after the wedding breakfast and before the first dance, although some couples choose to serve their wedding cake as dessert to save on cost.

Traditional multi-tiered cakes are still the most common choice, although wedding cake decorations are becoming more elaborate. Many couples choose different flavored cake for each tier, for example chocolate, lemon and toffee. The tiers may also be decorated differently; try using the same color scheme but having iced stripes, polka dots, or flowers on individual tiers.

There has been a recent trend for cupcake towers and these work especially well for home made wedding cakes. Try getting your friends or bridesmaids together a couple of days before the wedding and get them to decorate your cupcakes in their own unique style.

Wedding toppers are making a comeback on wedding cakes, and there are a number of companies that will create a personalized topper depicting the bride and groom if you provide a photo and a description of the wedding outfits. If you have a limited budget for your wedding cake, just have a plain white cake with colored ribbon wrapped around the tiers and a fun topper to create a focal point.
