Maternity Wedding Dresses

Long gone are the days when a pregnant bride was rushed down the aisle attempting to hide her bump. Now most women who get married while they are pregnant are proud of their new found curves and want to celebrate the fact that they really are starting a family, with a baby on the way as well as a new husband by their side.

With our schedules getting ever busier and the average marriage age increasing, many couples don’t want to wait until the wedding is over before starting to try for children, but are happy to shop for both wedding favours and baby bedding at the same time.

With that in mind I’ve been looking at a few of the maternity wedding dresses that are now available for pregnant brides. Rather than trying to conceal the growing tummy under layers of fabric, most maternity wedding dresses are designed to emphasise and flatter the bump.

Many pregnant women find that they need more support in the bust area than usual, meaning that maternity dresses with wide straps or sleeves can be a good choice, although some brides are still happy to go strapless. Comfort is often a big factor for pregnant brides, and soft material with flat shoes tends to be a better option than boned bodices with killer heels.

Here are three of my favourite maternity wedding dresses.

  1. The first is a beautiful silk maxi dress from Crave at John Lewis, which is available exclusively online for £380. The empire line design means that the super soft fabric flows perfectly over the bump and the sequined waistband adds a touch of sparkle.
  2. The second is the White Orchid Gown from Tiffany Rose which is a stunning lace dress with v-shaped neckline and three quarter length sleeves. Ideal for any stage of pregnancy the White Orchid costs just £235 from the Tiffany Rose Website.
  3. The third is not actually designed as a maternity wedding dress, but with its empire line style and the vertical pleats that flow down the front of the skirt it would be ideal with a growing bump. The bandeau neckline and ruched bodice are flattering for the pregnant bride that still wants to embrace the strapless silhouette. At just £135 from Debenhams, this ivory bandeau bridal dress is a real bargain.
